Introduction

Malina Chhoun

The purpose of this homepage is to showcase my completed works done for my Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences class at North Dakota State University 2013.
The projects in my e-portfolio include:

  • Resume
  • Culture (Media) Diary
  • White Noise (novel) Reflections
  • Please Give (film) Reflection
  • White Noise Multimedia Project and Reflection
  • White Noise Critical Analysis Proposal
  • White Noise Critical Analysis
  • T+L Magazine: Letter to the Writer
  • T+L Magazine: Article Commentary
  • T+L Magazine: Rhetorical Analysis

Of the projects that I completed for this class, my best work was my rhetorical analysis of Travel plus Leisure Magazine. As a hospitality and tourism management student, I was able to focus my analysis to key issues that affect tourism today, such as marketing techniques and honesty of textual content. As a traveler that is subscribed to the magazine as well, I have a deep fondness for the learning I received in each article. However, I have also seen the steady changes as the years pass. My paper focuses on the rhetoric now used by T+L to attract affluent readers while giving dreams to the average, less than six-figure earning, reader.

My culture (media) diaries are merely my everyday experiences with different types of media. I have a passion for music, I love television, and I enjoy playing video games. My diaries are just a day-in-the-life of me and the things I enjoy doing.

The Please Give film reflection focused on Alex and his philandering. My focus was in interpreting his actions as being directed by all the women he encounters in the film. Alex is really the only male character that is given a background as well as follow through throughout the entirety of the film.
The White Noise multimedia project I completed focused on my everyday conflict with my cellphone. I want to throw it off a bridge but feel completely and utterly desolate if I have misplaced it. Every day, the sounds of my cellphone surround me with chaos and noise. My YouTube video is just a reflection of what I feel I go through from the time I wake up until I end my day.

The White Noise reflections that I completed during the course of reading White Noise by Don DeLillo were my opinions on the sections we were assigned to read. I focused mainly on the characters and their need for “noise.” My writing was less about situations as I am more able to understand and be empathetic with people. The characters seemed so simple on the surface but their motivation and their reasoning were so complex, especially when compared to their actions.

The White Noise critical analysis I completed focused on consumerism. America is a land of consumerism, excessively so. I enjoyed writing this paper because I can relate much to it. I tend to overspend, especially emotionally. Impulse buying. I feel the paper was a success but I did not incorporate enough current events into my analysis.

My final project included a commentary of an article and a letter to the writer of the same article. The article is from T+L Magazine called Project You. The writer is a T+L writer named Peter Jon Lindberg. I took some issue with his negative remarks about hotels doing research on guests via their social networking pages such as Facebook and Twitter. I argue that hotels should not be condemned for using information that people post publicly on the World Wide Web.
